A lot of good answers here. I'm not sure which one is the official dictionary answer so you'll have to get a dictionary to find it.
My definition of insanity is disharmony with nature and natural law. The insane seek to resist their well being and the well being of society-the most basic sense of this is of maintaining good health. There can be no "moral" definition of sanity because whatever or whoever is most powerful will always be the definer.

i am a psychologist... "insanity" is a legal term meaning that a person could not tell the difference between right or wrong at a given momment, such as when they commit a crime.
psychologically, the term "psychotic," which is close to insanity, but it means that a person is experiencing things which are not "real" -- such as hallucinations or delusions. he/she may or may not know that they are psychotic.

Insanity is legal concept in which someone is considered to be less responsible or absolved of responsibility for his or her actions due to his or her mental state. In some jurisdictions, that person must be unable to know that his or her actions were wrong; in other jurisdictions, the person must have a severe mental illness.
There is no diagnostic category of "insane."

I guess I would define insanity as a mental characteristic that is so far outside the "norm" that a person with that characteristic cannot function in society.

Personally, I believe the definition to be the inability to distinguish, or keep from perpetrating actions either harmful to yourself or others.
This is not a clinical definition. To find that all you have to do is look it up.
I believe our society brands many as insane who are merely seeing life from a different angle... and if it's not harmful to them or others where is the harm?

I wouldn't know I'm completely sane (please note the sarcasm and irony)
Insanity is pretending that you are not insane, now thats completely crazy.
OK OK its just a word that we humans made up to justify locking up or deriding all the people who think differently than the mainstream.

That's when you cannot control yourself, relatively permanent disorder of your mind. Also it can be a defect of reason as a result of mental illness, such that a sick person does not know what he or she is doing or that it is wrong.
