I feel like I need to keep pressing the clutch when downshifting till I'm certain that my speed is slow enough before the car starts boucing which sometimes happens whenever I shift to a lower gear like when I approach the red light for example. For this reason, I started to hit the neutral straight from 4th instead.

Down shifting is engine braking. There's nothing really wrong with downshifting unless you are going from 5th to 3rd at 80mph. If you are slowing down to a stop light and you downshift from 5th to 4th, that's fine. Just don't put it into 4th and completely let go of the clutch. You want to slowly get off the clutch so slow down the engine not jerk it.
Of course while your downshifting, you are also braking so its a joint process.
The difference between 5th and 4th gear is that 5th gear is overdrive used when you are traveling and you go into fuel management mode. So don't worry about slowing down and then getting into 4th too early..there's really no such thing.

It sound as if you are short shifting. That means down shifting before the car slows down and it's rpm's have dropped. You can slow down in 4 th. gear and use your brakes and slide the trans to neutral and stop. Too much down shifting puts wear and tear in your clutch and manual transmission synchronizer rings.

downshifting to stop isn't good, some people will say it will save your brakes, but it will wear out ur engine and tranny, brakes are cheaper to fix than trannys. if u wanna stop in any gear, just put it in neutral and use the brake. if u want to downshift then you should double-clutch, it's what i do. just google "how to double clutch" and ur set. you should downshift when rpm's get to under 1750 to save gas. (I don't recommend downshifting to stop the car, use ur brakes instead.)
