Since we're mammels we're all connected to our mothers in the womb, so why is that we as humans are the only ones with belly buttons?

I suddenly just thought of this when my dog rolled over for a belly rub and I realized she was (as to be expected) 'belly button-less'.

Yes, dogs DO have belly buttons, and it's called an umbilical scar actually, the place where the umbilical cord was attached. All mammals , except the marsupials( animals with pouches like kangaroos) and the monotremes ( platypus that lay eggs[!]) have umbilical cords, it's one of the things that defines them as mammals. The umbilical cord connects the foetus to the placenta in the mother's womb and is what provides nutrients to the developing puppy. After birth the momma dog bites it in two and it dries and drops off, leaving the belly button. It's not as prominent as a human one but it is there, if you look real close on the dogs tummy you will find it, just a small "innie". (Give Pooch a good tummy rub while your looking they love that) The marsupials and monotremes and even birds have something similar but it is much smaller and doesn't leave much of a scar. Marsupials spend their fetal life in the pouch with their mouth attached to a milk nipple. A foetus that develops in an egg has a cord that leads to the yolk. The scar is easier to see on larger mammals but bulls are harder to roll over so I do not know if they have an innie or an outie, besides they wear their ring in their nose and not their belly butt

But most doggies have fuzzy little bellies, too fuzzy to see a navel scar.

I had a dog that had a large line on her belly that looked like a scar from being spayed.

But she wasn't.

Spayed, that is.

But it's a good point that human belly buttons seem much more conspicuous than other mammal belly buttons. If you see a very young kitten or puppy, sometimes you can see a little stub of an umbilical cord.

But that's usually only if you see them before they're weaned.

From wikipedia...

The navel, also called a belly button, or umbilicus, is a scar on the abdomen, caused when the umbilical cord is removed from a newborn baby. All placental mammals have a navel. While it is fairly conspicuous in humans, in most mammals it appears only as a thin hairless line.

Which is as I thought it was.

humans are the only ones with umbilical cords attatched to the uterus before birth.when they are delivered, the doctor cuts the cord.what is left on the baby, dries up and drops off within a week. what is left in the mother is also delivered after the baby. that is why it is called afterbirth.
