If the 8 and the 4 are multipliers and x is a variable, then the answer is 2. It would be more usual to write 8x / 4x than
x8 / x4.
If 8 and 4 are subscripts, then you can only write the answer as x8 / x4.

if you meant 8x ÷ 4x, the answer is simply 2.
On the other hand, if you meant x^8 ÷ x^4:
x^8 ÷ x^4 = x^(8-4) = x^4

x^8/x^4 = x^(8 - 4) = x^4
Rule: x^m/x^n = x^(m - n)
