What fraction do you have to be of a certain race in order to qualify on college applications as that race?

I have heard 1/8, but I want to be certain.

I think that is true for Native Americans (since many people were claiming to be Native American because they had all heard that their great, great, great, great grandmother was a Native American princess), and/or they may need to prove that they are involved with the tribe, but I don't think there is a limit on other races. It is all self-reporting anyway.

The Federal government will recognize you as a certain race, if you can prove 1/8.
