The adjective 3rd World Country does not apply to Mexico anymore, according to mexican scholars, a more appropiate title is "developing country" (kinda like from third to develope country, sort of second world...)
According to FORBEs the richest person in the world is not Bill Gates anymore, but a mexican called Carlos Slim, he is very very rich, but at expense of mexicans, his most profitable business it's the Mexican Telephone Company/Monopoly TELMEX, the only phone company in the whole mexico (there are also some other small ones but they all serve to TELMEX since the company owns all the phone lines in mexico, this companies just rent them from it).
The breach between poor and rich is growing each day, first due to lack of sexual and overall education in some of th most marginated groups, bad political/corporative practices were the only thing that matters is money for some and the lack of interest of some (most) of the people to improve (finding help for themost insignificant dutties some times is a big empress!!!)

RE:
Is Mexico a third-world country or not? Does it have the world's most billionaires? Why the huge contrast?
Economically speaking, what official economic category does Mexico fall into?
Is is officially a third-world country or not?
I have also heard that Mexico is the country with the world's most billionaires. Is that true?
And if Mexico is indeed a third-world country, then how could it...

Well let's get this straight. The terms of first, second, and third world has nothing to do with how rich or developed a country is. It was a term used in the cold war era where first world countries referred to NATO and the allies of the US. Second world referred to the USSR and it's allies. Third world referred to all countries who were neutral during the time, Switzerland was one of them. So no, as of today Mexico is not a third world country since it's an ally of the US and is part of the UN. The classification you're looking for is developing country because parts of it are still heavily poor, the nation itself is not poor. It's very rich actually, but corruption and greed holds progression back, despite having schools that are top tier and has a big economy that is growing.

If we look at the rich oil exporting countries, then the picture could be more clear about Mexico Saudi Arabia and Qatar etc all have HIGH GDPs and the population is mainly rich but that's only because of a natural resource, which is in this case OIL. In order for a country to be developed then the following has to apply: - it shouldn't be dependent on natural resources and should have a very advanced industry - It should have a high spending on Research and Development R&D ( developed nations spend 3% of their GDPs on R&D while third world countries spend 0.3% of their lower GDPs on R&D) - it should have a sophisticated financial system and markets - It should have a very good educational system - a good health coverage GDP per capita in Mexico is very low. Health conditions aren't good and there is a very high rate of unemployment. The industry is still not strong and the rich apprently are very corrupt. It still has a lot to do, but if someone tells you the richest person lives in Africa, then you should always ask how do the live poor in Africa. Same thing applies to all nations!

Mexico should take care of it's people first and foremost, yea they got this billionaire but is he doing for the people nothing. I don't think mexicans would have been coming to the U.S. if their country was doing the right thing with the money they have.

Wow! Most of you do not even know what is meant by "third world". Allow me to explain. A third world country is/are: Some of the poorest slowly developing cuntries. A technologically less advanced country. Economies are still dependent on developed countries. Generally characterized as poor with an unstable government. Still having high rates of poulation growth. illiteracy and disease. Does this describe Mexico? Not even close. I would group Mexico with other Countries with an economy consistently and fairly strongly developing over a longer period (China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Costa Rica, Egypt, much of South America, etc.) Some people are just haters. Stop the stereo typing broad based ethnic grouping. Mexico is not a "first world" country but it sure is a nice place to visit! Yours Truly, loud, obnoxious, drunk, racist American.
