Is the idea of being a "gentleman" or a "lady" a thing of the past? Something that people only pretend to do now, if they do? What about heroes and heroism, does that also belong to another (more idealistic) era?

Chivalry is still around, but not so much in the middle class. The very poor and the very rich still have the idea of big gender differences, but the middle class has been changed because we realized that women are not little pieces of property!! It's a good thing.

Heroes still live today, but I think the criteria has broadened. Now, any person who survives a "tragedy" is a "hero."

I could care less about chivalry, as it was really just a bunch of gender-related societal rules, and implied that men and women had to be constrained to specific stereotypes. I would like to see more mutual respect among people. For instance, I hold a door open for someone whether it is a man or a woman.

Also, people tend to sugarcoat the past and try to make it into some paradise. Keep in mind that there were huge racial disparities, and things like molestation and spousal abuse were just hidden, not absent.

Rap culture....

In my neighborhood it's not dead though. A girl can walk down the street and boys will offer to hold her backpack, buy her candy, whatever. Maybe that's more of a Latino thing though...
