There's a great deal wrong with the media, but don't confuse pundits and commentators and talking heads with actual journalists.

Bill O'Reilly is not a journalist. Neither are any of the other shouting pundits on the cable news networks. Neither are most of the idiots on talk radio.

You'll find that despite the negative culture of sensationalism that seems to be enveloping the industry, most journalists go into the field because they genuinely care about writing the truth to inform the public.

It's not for the money or the fame, that's for sure. It's a hard, competitive job. It doesn't pay very well unless you're very lucky and work very hard.

I'm dismayed to see so many respondents saying "Yes." They don't seem to realize the extent to which they rely on journalism for information and enlightenment. Good journalism is crucial for any functioning democratic society.

I don't like where the industry is going any more than the next person, but I know what journalism CAN be, and I know how important it is. We are not professional s--- stirrers. Perhaps editors and media moguls are-- but don't blame the working journalists who are in the trenches every day, trying to turn out solid stories on tight deadlines.

There's a book you should read called "The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect" by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel. I highly recommend it.

There are very few TRUE journalists today. But there are many story fabricators to elaborate on the news events to get ratings and higher salaries and positions. This has come about primarily because of TV an instant news from around the world.

Honest to goodness "journalists" dont do that. They investigate stories and try to get all sides of a story. They have done a lot of good by getting the whole story out to the public. You're probably thinking of the people who thrive only on controversy, without thinking about veracity. You probably dont know the names of most journalists. The ones that we hear a lot about are called gossip mongers. They stir **** for a living.

Yes..dilettantes subdued and ordered to toe the lines fixed by the owners..they are sh8t and not of the days when journalism was a much maligned profession but not bending over a desk for their superior's pleasure..they are now the parasites they hoped tell the story..that was real and tried to make a change to ordinary people's lives that would evoke an outcry rather than..'o well',that's life these days. There is no justice but capitulation to inanity that passes for the Truth.

To a certain extent - there is usually some basis of truth in what they write but they tend to exaggerate and sensationalise - it is what sells papers - so the rest of us must enjoy reading it and like a good juicy piece of gossip too!!!

The trouble with Journalists is, they exaggerate too much and blow things up out of proportion.
