im very curious as to what GOOD reasons i have as a black female to be excited abt the 4th of july, i mean im gonna eat, dance, and sneak drinks, but as a black community what do we have to celebrate, i mean in my opinion if this country would not have gained freedom from the british for the most part our plight in america could have been avoided, also im not patriotic what so ever so please tell me what has america done for blacks besides a swift kick in the *** that i should celebrate?

I don't really celebrate this holiday either and I am white. But I guess we have this holiday to celebrate America now. Not for the reasons it became a holiday in the first place.
I understand why non whites would ask this question. I guess my reply is...To celebrate America, and what our victories are. Even if you feel there are few. Where else would you want to be. America does have a million problems, but America is still the greatest place on Earth. That is why it is full of such a variation of people, they all wanted to be here for a reason. That is the very essence of what America was supposed to be. I too am not very patriotic per say, however I am proud to be an American and would defend this country proudly if I had too. I admire our men and women that protect us. Even if our leaders send them to fight nonsense wars, they are still protecting us and the rights and freedoms that we all enjoy. America still offers this protection to Blacks. You do have rights and privileges that you would not have any where else. Even though you are put through B.S. all the time for stuff, this is still your country too, maybe you should act like it? or live some where else?

I've been asking the same question myself for the last couple of years. While whites were celebrating their new found freedom our ancestors were getting whipped on some plantation. The 4th of July too me is just a reason to get a day off and spend time with family friends over a good cook out. Personally I suggest that blacks celebrate Juneteenth, the day that we supposedly gained our freedom in this country. Which is basically the same celebration like the 4th, but its a day where everyone in this country became free.

You should celebrate the 4th of July because you are an American. You dont have to be patriotic and I do understand what you are saying but at the same time, Independence and freedom was for all of us. Even if it took some of us longer to get it then others. Look at it this way, we could all still be under British rule paying high taxes with virtually no rights.

Love America and stay. Hate it, then leave. No one stopping you. You got the freedom to roam the World. Of course you can go back to Africa. When you are there, start a protest against the Leaders there that it was their ancestors that sold all your ancestors into slavery. To solve a problem you need to get to the root of the problem. The roots are in Africa. Don't blame American Whites. They just showed the money (or goods) and the African's could not resist. Your own kind betrayed all of you African Americans.
I am not White; just an outsider looking in to this "Why do Blacks hate Whites." There is no justification for the Whites to be blamed. The blames fall on the weaker race. Sorry that you are now angry but face the truth.

good point. but when i celebrate the 4th, i'm not really thinking about where the tradition came from, just the memories i have of the celebration and the fireworks!!! hehe, love fireworks. anyway, i don't really have much reason to celebrate it either since to my knowledge I'm more native american than English... so really i should be even less celebrating it since the holiday is about a victory by those who took my ancestors' land away from them.

I've always wondered why black people waste their time doing so. Personally I just think of it as a time to bond with the family, I don't celebrate it. Alot of blacks are aware of this, in Milwaukee a group celebrates it as "The 4th of U-Ly" and they talk about how this holiday is not black people's.

you must do what you feel in your heart is the right thing to do. however, remember you are a blank blank lot freer in the USA than in some other parts of the world. along with this if things hadn't changed years ago ownership of people might still be the case. before you condemn for what you don't have better be grateful for what you do have.

um, because you live in america, just because your black doesn't mean you shouldn't celebrate our independance. The United States has done plently for us ( i am a biracial teen), we get to go to school, and have opportunities to have a better life like everyone else, simply, you live in the best country in the world, no other place has such opportunity to become watever you want to be, you should be proud and thankful for this
