My first year was not exactly fun. In fact, it was like high school for me but worse. In high school I at least had a couple of friends that I could talk to, but none in college. I've been sheltered my whole life w/ really overprotective parents who still really don't let me do much of anything except study, so making friends has always been a problem for me. I wouldn't even admit I was depressed though until I was finished w/ college, so I'm scared next year will be just a repeat of the last. I even had trouble studying though b/c all I could do was turn off the lights, keep the shades closed, and sit in my room all day, a lot of the time w/o eating. When I did eat, it was the same thing EVERYDAY, 2 hamburgers for lunch and a box of macaroni for dinner. Of course I always went to class, but I felt extremely awkward being there. My parents don't let me do anything at home, but I'm not depressed now b/c I don't have to see people. Is it even possible to enjoy myself next year? TIA

Also I'm planning on joining a volunteer club or something, since they are the only type of clubs that suit my interests. Maybe that would help me feel better about college, idk... I am agnostic too, so religious clubs are out of the question.

Yes, it is possible for things to shape up. I really disliked my first year of college. But 2nd and 3rd year were much easier and enjoyable. You will be more adjusted to the school as well.

Do you commute or live on campus? If it's possible, you might want to try living in the dorms or in an on campus apartment. You will have more independence, without having to worry about your parents checking up on you.

And as mentioned, you can always join clubs, commuters club, volunteering, or clubs that pertain to your major.

And if you still feel blue, I'd suggest talking to someone that works in the counseling center at your school. It is free and it really can help.

Good luck.

The volunteer club sounds good. Look into more clubs that align with your likes. Also, try to be active in those clubs.

Next, I could not tell if you live at home or on campus. If you live at home, try to move out. You'll feel more in touch with what is going on at school and give you more opportunities to interact with fellow classmates. If moving out is out of the question, then get involved with more clubs and organizations. Your involvement will give you more reasons to get out of the house. If you live on campus, try baking cookies or something. Do what you can with the appliances on hand. You'd be amazed how many people on your floor will knock on the door for cookies.

Good luck. One last idea, try looking for or starting a study group. Your 2nd year will be tougher and other students may want to study more.

You are doing what I would suggest, join a volunteer club and help people. You will meet people that way. The first year is always hard, and it gets easier as you go along. Work hard at your studies.
Another good thing to do is hook up with a professor in an area that you are interested in. Find out what kind of research the professors are doing. it will get you a good resume and prepare you for after college, and you will get a real flavor for what kind of work people do in your area of interest. Good luck!

Hey i do relate to you a lot..i have been through that phase..believe me the only way that you can get over this is by gaining some self confidence..just choose a day and start off with saying that i rule the world..go to ppl, talk to them about anything, discuss with them...always have a smile on your face..smile at ppl....help ppl in need..
You need to get out of the complexities of life and understand that evryone out here is to live life to the fullest..noboby here is better than the other...don't feel down....do what you feel like...don't let your parents rule your life now..you are old enough...just go out and have a smile on your face...this is the first step to building self confidenece...believe in your capabilities..understand that you are a good human being..and you are better at a lot of things...you can help ppl.
Just keep the above words in your mind.
You can always talk to me. We can help each other.
Take care.

I just want to add a healthy diet and exercise will make you feel better. Your diet should consist of 6 small well balanced portions a day. This will help your mind with your studies as well. For more info on what you can do to lesson the effects of depression.., e mail me at

Talk with your doctor about depression. You can see if he or she wants to put you on an antidepressant. Also see if you can get counselling. You can see if you are depressed because you are lonely/homesick or if you are depressed because of a chemical imballance.
