If someone were getting on your nerves and you have nicely tried to hint to them or even tried to directly but nicely tell them and they still pester the crap out of you, is it ok to now be rude and just tell them to stay the he77 away from you and why?

I'd like to tell you that it would be very rude and The other Person would get very offended so it's better to 'suffer them along' because in that way that Person would not feel bad.
YOU will instead. But it's a worthy sacrifice, right? Wrong.
TELL it to that Person. Yep, try to be as polite as possible, but make it CLEAR.
It's most likely that The Person will be mad at you for a couple of weeks (max:), but in the end... things will come to normal. For you:) And for him/her.
And... Please... instead of "Stay the hell away from me" use "Would you please be so kind to... LEAVE ME THE **** ALONE" (just kidding! Use the "be so kind" to the end:) - and if he/she doesn't catch the hint THIS time - proceed to the heavy artillery.

Yes it is ok. I am a very civil person and I know how to get my point across politely. If I've done and said all I can to let you know you're being a bother and I don't want to deal with it; but you refuse to respect me- THEN I will give you hell. I may raise my voice, get really mean and maybe even cuss. It seems like some people only take you seriously when you have a huge attitude. And boy do I hold a grudge- that usually teaches them.

I think it is okay to be rude if they don't get the hint. You have the right to tell people to leave you alone if you don't want to be bothered.
