The old chuck wrench method worked well but all the new drill chucks are hand tightened and do not hold well. Bits and drills fall out or won't turn when you try to drill a hole.

Sounds like you are having trouble with the hand grip chucks... that's not as unusual as it sounds. You can replace the 'Modern' chuck with the older style 'keyed' chuck, quite easily. Jacobs is a very high quality brand of chuck, and they make most of the chucks used on the better quality tools. You can find replacement chucks at some of the building supply stores, Sears, or online...

WHy not replace it? You could unscrew the new keyless chuck and bring the drill into a store like Sears or Home Depot to buy a new keyed-chuck that will fit onto the original threaded shaft.

I think your drill is a dewalt. If you look at the drill bits that dewalt sells, they have one flat side especially for keeping the chuck tight, put a round bit into it and you might have problems.

Buy a professional grade such as DeWalt, Porter-Cable, Makita, I have used all of these and all worked well.
