I always see posts about republicans catering to the rich and democrats handing out to the poor, But at what point($) do you consider someone to be rich or poor?

Really, most people in the US are considered rich by the rest of the world.

My husband traveled to Ethiopia. When people have no homes and defecate on the side of the road, that's poor. Those of us here sitting in our nice homes at our computers need to be thankful that we have so much more than many others...doesn't matter whether you are a Democrat or Republican.

For some reason the politicians that are representing the working classes and all of the people are not happy with the label of socialist. Maybe the socialist are poor because of all that they give to the masses. Socialist issues have much more tax burden and the distribution of money is more equally. The poor are poor by design but people will say they want to live that way and no design could cause poverty. The wealth we have in this country is protected by the system of the republic and if you have money you do not want it exploited. It is to easy to put values on the people that keep them stuck and unable to move forward. To design a system that skims off the money and services from the less fortunate has my misgivings. The socialist that would tax the hell out of the comfortable citizens has it's problems, too. The uber wealthy that could not possibly spend the money they earn and buy health care at any cost are part of the corporate me greed. They could pay more taxes and they are buying laws and legislation that the less fortunate can not.

Rich > $100 Million a year income

Poor < $100 M

The Government used to use the $25 M number, that is so out dated.

Using the 100 number allows more people to have a tax break and the Middle class percentage is not really effected much compared to say a $500M rich class

Most people in America have everything on credit. They don't own a house car or the clothes on there back ' they make payments . So don't miss a day of work all you rich people out there or you might not be able to make payments on your school loans that got you that great job .

I got friends that think their on top more like 1-2 paychecks from the bottom. For me I saved for years , and bought my cloths ,House ,Volvo xcv70awd, cash!! So am I rich or just smart ? I don't know , but at least I can say I hold title , and deed on my things , Can they ? nope that's why I'm chilling on this sunny day , and there at work . So yup I'm feeling rich right now...

'the rich' are those with enough dash tobuy a politician. the giong rate is a few dozen million in 'donations'. the poor is someone that doesnt seem to have an ability to think beond themselves or get out of a dire situation. ive met so many people without a cent or prospects for money or even the need/want for money that were fulfilled in so many ways. so i cant say a lack of wealth is poor. i cant really say a mass of wealth is rich then....hmm.

According to the definition the U.S. Bureau of Census uses, a family of four with an income over $18,244 is not poor. The poverty cutoff for a single-person household is $9,359 and that for a two-person household is $12,000. With those definitions, the poverty rate was 11.7 percent, or about 33 million Americans living in poverty in 2001.

I consider most of us Americans to be neither. And both. Yes, there are the ultra-rich and the poverty poor. They are here. And I am neither. I believe that notions like the one you are describing are a subversive attempt of the left to redefine the thinking of rational Americans. Until the Liberals in government are selling all their goods to feed the poor, I don't think they need to be trying to take any more money from me.

Poor is no income or less than a living wage. They don't have all their needs met all the time and don't have enough resources to supplement the needs they can't meet on their own. It depends on where you live and what your needs are how much you need for a living wage, but it's usually about twice or three times minimum wage. Rich means you have all of your needs met and could do so without working for 2 years or more and can afford luxeries, investments, vacations, etc, without worrying about saving up or a budget. Middle class is you have all your needs met and could survive without your regular income for 6 months and could take a vacation or have luxeries if you budget carefully. Working class means you have your needs met most or all the time but have to stick to a budget and can't afford luxeries.

The distinctions are arbitrary. For rich I consider anyone with over two million dollars in assets or over one million dollars a year in income. For the poor, anyone with income of less than $11,000 per year.

Rich- you need things you want

Poor-you want things you need

additional comment:
The two are dependent on each other for wthout one, the other would not exist. If everyone had a million dollars in the bank, a million dollars would have little value. If everyone were impoverished, poverty would be the norm and would no longer be called poverty.
