It all depends on how well the engine is maintained, and the driving style. However - all other things being equal, the V6 will tend to be more durable. Simply because it runs at lower RPM to provide the same power, so less friction, less heat, less wear & tear.

Equally maintained the V6 will outlast the 4 cyl. The 6 has more power and torque at a lower R.P.M. In the end it is the total of R.P.M.'s that determine the wear on bearing surfaces etc.

Well generally speaking 4 cyl last longer than 6 cyl. However it also really depends on who made the engine. For example a toyota 6 cyl would most of the time last longer than a ford made 4 cyl. Also it depends on where the engine was made. For example not all toyotas are the same. A toyota built in Japan would last longer than one built in their U.S plant studies have shown. Another key factor is when your engine was built or the car in general. If you find your vehicle was built on a Friday it is proven that the quality is severely worse than say one built on a Monday. In conclusion it depends on who built it.

The V6 gets my vote. Ford 4 cylinders start coming unglued around 150,000 miles, but I have seen the V6s with over 300,000 miles on them and still going.

The most miles or KM's I've seen from any type of engine was a diesel. Give that some consideration.

All else fixed, I will say V6 (it is more efficient) than a 4 in line...
