They wanted all the brown ones taken out. I remember hearing this on a radio rock trivia contest.

The story behind Van Halen's no brown M&M's was to make sure that their contracts were read. If they found any brown M&M's they new that their contract had not been read which told them they were not sure if all stipulations of their contract such as lighting, stage set-up etc. had been done correctly. Not an addiction at all, just smart business!
