I would have to agree with the other answers, although that is not the reason Iceland is unique. The real reason is that Iceland is the only place on the Earth where a mid-oceanic ridge (the splitting apart of two plates) rises above the surface of the ocean that is not associated with a continent (possibly due to a hotspot). That begs the question of why there and only there? The answer to that question remains an enigma to Geology, and is not explained by the Theory of Seafloor Spreading and Plate Tectonics.
