ok, well i'm going to get a guinea pig soon. and i was wondering if you could give me a list of supplies i would need for him/her. ( and i want to buy a very inexpensive cage, and i dont want any websites for learning to make your own pig cage.) i also want to know if there are different types of guinea pigs, i know that there are long haired ones, and short haired ones, but are there different kinds other than that? && i would also like to know how much, or if you could give me an estimate on how much all this is going to cost? how much the guinea pig would be and how much the supplies would be too....and is there like any special things i need to have for my pig? like vitimin drops in the water or something like that? this is the first guinea pig i've had so i want to make sure that everything is ready and i'm not missing anything important. so when i get home i dont realize that i need to go back and get food pellets or something. =]] Thanks in advance for your answers! =]]

Ok, I have had 5 guinea pigs (and I have one right now!), so, don't worry! You are in good hands! Here is where to start:

Water Bottles: water bottles are very important because if a guinea pig get dehydrated, he can die. Make sure that you have a big water bottle of two small ones. My guinea pig uses two small ones. Vitamin C is important. You can either put it in the water (some guinea pigs stop drinking their water when stuff is added to it), so I would recommend just sticking to oranges for now.

Food: my guinea pig LOVES his food. I would recommend a dry mix food (don't get the kind that just has alfalfa pellets in it!). This way, the guinea pig will have a choice between dryed carrots, or corn in his food. FResh veggies and fruit is VERY important. It keeps the teeth down (because if they get too long, the piggie can stop eating and it really hurts!). I would recommend at least 3 carrots, and 1 orange slice every other day. You can mix it up a little like 4 carrots on that day and an orange slice the next!

Toys: my guinea pig has a cardboard tunnel that we got at our local pet store. I am sure that your local pet store has one! They are great, because, a piggie has chew on it and hide in it too! guinea pigs don't really need any toys.

Alfalfa hay: this is really important stuff that guinea pigs can never have too much of! I give my piggie about 2 hand fulls of hay every other day. I would do the same if I were you!

Bedding: bedding can cost a lot! I would try to find a cheap kind. we use shavings. they work great and are very cheap! \

Food bowls: I would really recommend a cermamic dish. This way, the piggie won't be able to tip it over! And, the piggie won't be able to chew it down like it would to a plastic bowl!

Here are all the prices of everything:

water bottles= $5.00 - $10.00
food= $10.00 every week
bedding= $10.00 - $20.00 every two weeks
ceramic bow= $5.00 - $8.00
alfalfa hay= $5.00 - $10.00 every two weeks
toys (tunnel)= $5.00 - $10.00 replace every month

Guinea pigs don't come cheap! I hope that this helps you make up your mind on what to get and what not to get!

Don't put vitamin drops in his water. That's not a good idea. You'll need :Cage-$30-$150
Food $6-$15
Bedding $6-$25
Toys (about 3-5)$2-$15
Hidey Houses-$5-$25 (or make ur own from boxes)
Food Bowl (if it doesn't come w/cage)$3-$15
Water Bottle $7-$15
That's about all u'll need basically. Guinea pigs cost from $24-$45.There are more types of Guinea Pigs than just those two you mentioned, I just don' know what they are, sorry.I think all this would come out to around $80-$100 bucks.I think for vitamin you should get him these vitamin c orange things. They're like $6. And Timothy Hay. That's like $5. Guinea Pigs are the best I LOVE them!! They're kind of expensive, but it's well worth it.

My daughter had about 5 of them all at one time, best cage is a 20 gallon fish tank, stops the litter from getting on the floor. Pine litter is what you should use, a watter bottle, get the bigger one they drink allot, seeds,instead of pellets and they do like fresh lettuce, I say a 20 gallon instead of a ten because it gives them more room to run. Hold them daily and bond with them but they do like to nibble it's a sign they like you. Change the litter weekly and clean the aquarium with just water, do not use windex.. Fish tank around $30, Litter $5, seeds $5 water bottle $2.50, Guinea pig $15 Having a great pet Priceless. Oh yes after awhile they will learn your voice and start serenading you with squeeks when you come in the room.
