They were called the Crusades, began in the 1100's, started by the Holy Roman Catholic church.
By the way, they were not "driving out the Muslim invaders", they were reclaiming the Holy Lands that had been lost after the Romans destroyed the Jewish state in Palestine.
For the first hundred years of that war, the Christians won. They did not do so well in the second hundred though.
