There are several books out for each of these gems:

Calvin and Hobbes (by Watterson)
Bloom County (also Opus) (by Breathed)
The Far Side (by Larson)
Non-Sequitur (by Wiley)
Doonesbury (by Trudeau)
Peanuts (by Schultz)
Dilbert (by Adams)

There's also a neat series of short books (40pp or so each) by Matt Groening (creator of Simpsons) called "Life in Hell" (includes School is Hell, Work is Hell, etc....) These books are a grab-bag of different themes, some funnier than others and some fairly mature, and they helped pave his way onto TV.

And there are some compilation books of B.C (by the recently departed Johnny Hart). Almost always mildly funny, and occasionally gut-busting hilarious, but always in good taste.

If you're not constrained to newspaper-style comic strips, you may still be able to find the old (1970's-era) paperbacks put out by Mad Magazine. They're filled with humor and satire, and Don Martin was one of the all-time great cartoonists.

There's a lot of funny comic books that don't have super heros. Be sure to check out the following: 'Liberty Meadows', 'Milk & Cheese' and 'Scud: The Disposable Assassin'. That's just for starters. Be sure to also check out 'Sam and Max'. On a technical note 'The Tick' also falls in that catagory with the premise alone. You can also laugh to 'Johnny the Homicidal Maniac' and 'Groo the Wanderer'. Happy Reading.
