Janace,
Granted I feel your concern because learning to drive any car with a standard transmission keeps you physically busy as you learn. As I read your description of your overwhelming feelings think of this first and foremost: When learning anything new be open minded and take small steps at a time. Your confidence will increase with practice. Your mother and instructor know how to build your confidence.

I was fortunate as a young person as I learned to drive and operate large farm tractors when I was only 10 years old. My first experience was operating a tractor in low gear around a hay field with a wagon in back while the older big boys tossed bales of hay on the wagon bed. The speed of the tractor was slower than most folks walk. Sorry to bore you with this but the point is gaining experience and building confidence and respecting limits.

When you obtain your learners permit your "mum" may take you to a large empty parking lot at night for your first driving experience. I wish you well. I was very impressed that you actually expressed your inner feelings.

Good luck!

PS. All my past relatives hale from Scotland. My wife's family are all from Sweden.

Janice, confidence comes with experience and if you aren't confident on the road don't go out!
Ask your Mum to take you go-karting and get some confidence driving a cart. You will learn a lot doing this and don't be intimidated by other carters as we all started from somewhere!
If build confidence then try a driving lesson and once you get your licence try an advance drivers cse, it will give you life saving lessons and make you a better driver than you Mum and Dad!

Good Luck!

You'll be fine!

It's just like anything else you've tried...it takes a little while at first and then you'll get it!

It's probably good that you are a little nervous; it shows you realize the seriousness of being a good driver.

Take it slow and you'll be fine. Good luck!

I know this sounds stupid, but it helps me. I basically assume that everyone else driving around you is ignorant and doesn't know what they are doing. That's how my parents made me less nervous.

practice driving in a parking lot until you're ready to drive in the streets but not in major streets until you are confident that you can drive in them
