i want to soften the water in my angelfish tank. i know that adding a piece of untreated driftwood to my tank will soften the water, but will the ph drop gradually, or will it cause ph shock to my fish?

It will be fine. The changes caused by the driftwood will be very slow. Do be careful after a time though that you watch the pH so that when you do water changes you don't shock th fish. If the tank becomes quite different from your tap water, you will need to adjust the new water to the tank water before you add it when doing a water change.

There is almost no reason to lower the pH of your tank. Angelfish will do fine in virtually all waters.

In fact it is far more dangerous to your fish to try to alter the pH and end up with an unstable pH, than it is to have the "incorrect" pH.
