The iphone can connect to the internet in two ways. The first method is through Cingular (A T&T) Edge 2G internet. This internet can be access anywhere you are on your mobile phone and is part of your cell phone plan with Cingular. The speed is about 300 kilobits per second, which is slow compared to Verizon and Sprint speed which is 700 kilobits per second on their mobile phones similar to DSL speed.

The second method for your iphone to connect to the internet is through Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Hotspots. Anywhere there is a wireless signal your iphone will detect it. You will see many area that have Wi-Fi such as hotels, airports, coffee shops, restaurants. There is a fee by the hour or by the day to use their wireless internet.

If you have a Wi Fi internet at home using DSL or Cable Internet through your home network setup then you can use your iphone to browse the internet and use your wireless internet at home for free.

Your laptop cannot connect to the internet wirelessly from your iphone. The laptop needs to connect to a Wi-Fi area that offers wireless internet. That would be either through a home network setup or through a public place that offers Wi-Fi for a fee.
