OK, boys and girls! Time for Chemistry 101.
NOS (Nitrous Oxide) contains one molecule of nitrogen, and 2 molecules of oxygen. When injected into a cylinder, the heat burns off the nitrogen, leaving the extra oxygen. Because extra oxygen is present in the cylinder, as is the mixture would run lean. That is why at the same time the switch is hit, extra fuel is added (sprayed) to the mixture.
In other words, more oxygen allows more fuel=more power.

When you heat nitrous oxide to about 570 degrees F (~300 C), it splits into oxygen and nitrogen. So the injection of nitrous oxide into an engine means that more oxygen is available during combustion. Because you have more oxygen, you can also inject more fuel, allowing the same engine to produce more power. Nitrous oxide is one of the simplest ways to provide a significant horsepower boost to any gasoline engine.

Nitrous oxide has another effect that improves performance even more. When it vaporizes, nitrous oxide provides a significant cooling effect on the intake air. When you reduce the intake air temperature, you increase the air's density, and this provides even more oxygen inside the cylinder.

Cast the Shadow has it right!

It leans the fuel air ratio. Leaning out a motor tends to produce more power, but comes at a price to the motor as it tends to burn a little hotter (cooler on intake, hotter on heads). Leaning a motor too much will burn holes in the piston.

Often this is seen in race dirt bikes when they try to lean out the mixture to produce more power just to get through a race a bit quicker, and then replace the piston.

more oxygen + more fuel = more horses.....put in nos and u need more fuel or engine will lean out and burn a piston...read up before u try it.
