should I get yet another beta fish? or try something new? If I get a new fish, it'd have to be something small, simple, and can live in a bowl, not an aquarium. what's a good candidate? or should I stick with betas?

I don't get why people put questions in their answers. this isn't a message board that I can respond to their questions.

my fish got sick. I'm not sure how. they do that sometimes. get over it. I take good care of my fish. my first fish lived for 2 years and died by a freak accident.

Betta fish are the only fish I know of that can live in a gallon of water. However, they should not be given any less than that. Just because they CAN survive in such a small amount of water doesn't mean they wouldn't be much happier and healthier in a 2 gallon tank with a filter and heater. Please consider that set-up for your betta instead.

However, if you're not willing to provide these basic amenities for your pet, then a betta is probably your best bet. They're very tolerant of their owners and are very easy to take care of.

PS. Goldfish should never be kept in bowls. They need much more water than people realise. Many say that "they only grow to the size of their container" but what really happens is that the goldfish stop growing because they have no more room to grow and their internal organs get stunted.

I loved have the betas because they are easy to keep clean and can stay in a bowl that you can decorate or leave empty because they are the decor. The other fish types need filters, heaters, ect. I did have a friend that had an African Frog in a small bowl. She said he was a bit of work and had to have a net top so he did not escape, plus the room temperature had to stay warm. But it was really a fun way to have a little pet of interest. If you want to step it up, don't go smaller than a 10 gal. and you can get some fancy little fish like guppies, neons, platies, ect. they need filters and heaters. Side filters work much better then under gravel and get a little suction vacuum to keep the bottom clean or a bottom feeding fish. Good luck

Betta is the only one who can live in a bowl. Did you remove the cholrine from the water. Was the water at room temp ?(not freezing cold), Did you overfeed him by any chace.? Did you adjust him to the water?, Did you rince the bowl out with JUST water, NO SOAP? Did you rince the plant, gravel etc?

What about Sea monkeys (as the person above suggested) There little shrimp guys:

Bettas are not even supposed to live in bowls, they will live, but they get very stressed (which can lead to disease). If you keep it in a filtered and heated tank, you could keep it and other fish, that would make it a lot happier... If you are going to keep pets, take care of them, don't get little bowls, they kill fish prematurely!

You should get a goldfish because it is the best fish for a bowl. It does not need a filter.
If you take good care of it it can live up yo 14 years.

The betta probably died because it was in a bowl.

You could try raising brine shrimp (sea monkeys)

Beta fish are pretty, but boring. You should try to get multiple new fish. I think that's more exciting.
