If you need a 1"x7.5" cedar plank you would have to buy the 1"x10" not the 1"x8" (which is about 1"x7.25"). The leftover strip is essentially waste. That's a screwed-up measurement system!

Why would you possibly think the lumber industry is responsible for the wood you waste? A real waste of lumber would be if they tried to stock every possible size you might need. Wood is renewable, they can always grow more trees.

It wouldn't make any difference what the industry set as a standard. Someone would want a board that needed to be ripped, thus creating "essentially waste". Maybe you could turn your thoughts to finding a good use for that "waste".
