I think this is just a marketing gimmick myself. Since you're familiar with brine shrimp: http://www.microimaging.ca/animal/17shrimp.jpg How simialr are these to what the packaging advertises:

Most of they people that I know who've had these ended up bored with them - they didn't look like the packaging said, you couldn't teach them tricks, and they died in a few months.

More people today are seeming to be interested in triops (at least they look cool): http://mytriops.com/

Personally, I like fish, crayfish, and larger freshwater shrimp and saltwater organisms for longer life and more interesting behavior. But that's just my opinion.

I use to give them to my tropical fish but i did'nt know that brine shrimp were called sea monkeys. The first time I saw them they were swirling round in a big jar in a tropical fish wholesalers.

I guess it is because they are very easy to look after and don't require a long term commitment. I had some when I was younger, but I didn't find them interesting enough at that time to get anymore once they had died.

I had them when i was younger, And thought they were easy to care for, But tropical fish is much fun that those, You can breed easy fish like gupies,mollies etc, Brineshrimp is like chocolate to tropical fish.
