most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:

An anti-virus program alone will not help you with a slow computer. It can be slow for many reasons, including spyware (anti-virus will not help), too little free or available space on your hard drive, too many fragmented files, and registry problems.
Sooo...
Get a decent spyware protection program and use it. Ad-Aware and Spybot are my choices; others will suggest other choices.
You might have to turn off system restore (in XP, right-click My Computer, choose Properties, then System Restore tab) and restart in safe mode (F8 while restarting).
Run full-system scans. Restart. Turn System Restore back on.
Then clean up your hard drive. Delete old unused files and uninstall old and unused programs. Run the disk cleaner (double-click My Computer, right-click on C: or whatever is your hard drive, and on the General tab, toward to bottom, click disk cleaner--and let it work). Then defrag your hard drive (use the Tools tab, then defragment).
You can use Ccleaner (a free program) for disk clean up instead, it also has a registry cleaner (called Issues--but be very careful with this one; maybe get some help so you don't inadvertently delete something you really need).

AVAST from www.avast.com
better than AVG that most reccomend, easy to install and use.
If PC slow, also scan for malware
I'd reccomend these 2, run each in turn
ADAWARE fro www.lavasoftusa.com (Free personal version)
also SPYBOT S&D from www.spybot.org (Again free for home use)
Also worth having in toolbox is CCLEANER from www.ccleaner.com again a free download, and a good general windows tidyup utility.
