Actually it was a collaboration mainly between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson

Note that these men died on the same day (July 4) in 1825

There was a committee to draft a declaration of Independence. However, Jefferson did the writing of majority of the writing of the Declaration of Independence. What we now know of the Declaration is not his original. To get the other members of the Continental Congress to vote for it, editing had to be done.
