Bettas are easier to take care of but that does not mean you can stick him in a bowl. He needs a filtered, heated tank.

batta is more easy than 4 goldfishIt's true, bettas are easier. They don't need aeration the way other fish do because they can breathe from the surface. But you should keep them in filtered, heated tanks, at least 78-80 degrees, with a cover, as they can jump. Some floating plants like wisteria are appreciated - they like to build their nests in them and they rest on the leaves. They can be good community fish, if you choose other species that won't nip their fins or invade their territory at the top of the tank (be warned, though, some bettas just never adjust to having other fish anywhere in their water). They can live in dirty water, since they breathe from the top, but that doesn't mean they should have to. They are prone to fin rot, and dirty water makes them more susceptible.
Goldfish require a lot more maintenance - they need much larger tanks, because they grow very large and they can put out a lot more waste. They don't need heaters, though, because they are cooler water fish. And they LIVE LONGER. On average, a betta might last 2-3 years. You hear stories about some living longer, but that's rare. A goldfish, on the other hand, if it's kept in a well-maintained, appropriate tank, can live 20 years.

Well, Bettas are easier to keep in the sense of bowl size, and oxygen, goldfish are known to be very hardy. If you have a well cycled, large enough tank, goldfish are not hard to care for at all; Bettas don't require a very large tank, but I would expect they would need their bowl cleaned out more often.
In the end, most fish take a fair bit of care, especially in the begining.
Just so you know, 4 common goldfish need a 30-50 gallon tank. 4 Comet goldfish need 40-75 gallon tank, and 4 fantail goldfish need 40-60 gallon tank (this is based upon maximum possible size). A Betta, while it might survive in a paper cup, it wouldn't be happy, and I wouldn't suggest keeping it in under a gallon.

i'd say batta fish...becuse 4 gold fish would eat a lot more than a baata fish so that will save some money on food. and gold fish need a lot of space since your gettin 4....
but goldfish tend to live longer... i have a few goldfish and they lived up to a year.

Give the Betta a 5+ gallon heated tank, clean it weekly and it will love you for life! Goldfish need about 30 gallon tanks (minimum) with a filter, weekly cleanings, but no heater... You decide which one is easier to keep. Hint: the answer is Betta...

actually i have two goldfish in a 1 gal tank. it's only $18 in the walmart. we use conditioner to help keep the tank clean and we throughly clean it only once a month. I also have beta's. Beta experts say you souldn't keep them in bowls but i know people who've had their bets's for 5 years in a bowl. They say if they blow bubbles than their happy. Mine must be very happy. I just don't try to put them into anything smaller than 1 gal. I love all our fish. the gold fish might not grow all that much but i don't really care...i like them that small and they seem happy. that's all that matters. good luck.

two very different types of fishes... well, considering that you would like to keep one of them.. give us further details on how big your tank is, on your equipment, etc... because that will answer your question on what fish would be better to keep....
in general, bettas do not really need big tanks, they are okay with 5-10 gs but a gold fish should have a minimum of 45 gs. when it comes to aeration, bettas require less saturated oxygen in their tank ascompared to gold fishes...
that's it... enjoy and good luck...=)
