What is commonly called cybernetics, the blending of man with machine, is currently referred to as cyberware.

Cyberware inferfaces are called "headware". A Massachusetts firm called Cyberkinetics has successfully implanted a a full in-brain interface chip called Braingate into a quadriplegic man, enabling him to interface with a computer to compose and check email.

Cyberware prosthetics are called "bodyware", a modern form of a rather old field. Experiments have been done where microprocessors, capable of controlling the movements of an artificial limb, are attached to the severed nerve-endings of a patient. The patient is then taught to try to move the artificial limb using signals from the brain, just like a natural limb.

Crossing over between headware and bodyware are those pieces of equipment attempting to replace lost senses. A great success in this field is the cochlear implant. The cochlear implant is surgically implanted and is used to replace damaged or missing hair cells, enabling a deaf patient to hear again. Although this device is firmly labeled a prosthetic, expiriments are being performed to tap into the brain itself. Coupled with a speech-processor, this could be a direct link to the speech centres of the brain.
