Good question. It does make you wonder when they are allowed to work outside the law so much. They are the ones doing much of the torture and killing of innocent people in Iraq so our military doesn't have to. They also patrolled the streets of New Orleans after Katrina. One wonders how this has happened. Except that Republicans (along with the WTO) want to privatize everything and Blackwater seems to be the first step. I remember when the word mercenary was an evil word. It is telling how much hate has grown since 9-11 that we now use mercenaries to do our dirty work.

Blackwater USA isn't a private army - it's a mercenary company (although they prefer the term "private military contractor") that was formed in 1997...when Bill Clinton was President.

Not only do they hire out "independent contractors" to bolster certain areas of combat, they also train indigenous forces and transport supplies (since that duty has become too hot for American soldiers).

No...Blackwater USA is not a private army, it's a mercenary army - which is far more dangerous if you look into our (the world's) past.

Blackwater is terrifying because they can do whatever they want with no fear of retribution. GWB signed an executive order which exempts all private armies such as Blackwater from prosecution for any crime they commit in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We are already on that slippery slope with regards to the Constitution
