...that if and when burglars, robbers and muggers are caught that they should be forced to repay to the victim the cost of what they have stolen, rather than be sent to the prisons which are full up anyway? And how would you enforce this?
I would make them clean the streets and any other menial task until the whole debt, plus interest, is paid.

Yes, there would be some redundancies but there would be a lot less robberies going on but some of them would still carry on robbing.
The whole point being: if they rob someone, they have to pay them back, so it would still need the law to carry on catching them, after all, they are stupid people, the crooks, to start with as no self-respecting intelligent person would resort to taking what belongs to others.

I personally think that its time the UK adopted the orange jump suit for offenders on community programmes. That way the public can see who they are easily.

Having said that the bleeding hearts would say that to do this would be a violation of their human rights! Just like its a violation of their human rights to be made responsible for their criminal actions which are put down to their deprived childhoods!

I would like to see them chained together at the side of railway lines removing the grafitti and picking the explosions of litter that seem to be there....

Not mathematically sound. If they simply repay the value of what they stole, then they are no worse off financially. They should be worse off and the victim also deserves a little something extra to compensate for the trauma of being burgled or robbed. I'd make them work towards payment of compensation which would not only pay back the value of what was taken, but which would provide the victim with the opportunity to pay towards a luxury item or a holiday. However, I see a snag in all this. If they clean the streets or remove graffiti for payment, who ends up footing the bill? We do -- as usual!

My wife was mugged a couple of years ago and 20 pounds stolen from her. They caught the person who did it and when I asked about the 20 pounds I was told by the police that the criminal didn't have to repay my wife the money. The government say they are running a justice system. Who exactly is the justice system been run for, It's obviously not being run for the benefit of the people of this country.

Fact, crime makes the world tick over. How many jobs around the world do you know that need crime in order to keep employing people? I would say probably in the region of a billion jobs. If crime was eradicated tomorrow that would be a lot people claiming benefits and a hell of a lot of companies going bust. Just looking at things realistically. Lol crime is part of the very fabric of our society. Only a fool wouldn't see that. Tell me where would all the people who would be out of a job if crime were cease to exist find employment? I don't think you have really thought about the enormity of it. List the jobs today that rely on crime to continue being a job at all. Just think about it for more than two seconds. Use your brain. I am not saying it is right but merely essential in the way our very system runs in the world. The only way to eradicate crime is to change the system entirely and that requires too much thought for your average politician. Something you won't be hearing from any of your local politicians anytime soon. No crime no need for Police forces of any kind, no need for judicial systems both of which employ an incredible amount of people around the world, no need for a huge bulk of insurance companies, no need for prison officials, I could go on and on but I think you get the point. Laws are written because they are meant to be broken. When someone breaks the law that someone pays for it and then someone else gets paid. I will say again I know it is not right but don't take it up with me I am not in control of the country. Write to your favoured politician and take it up with them. In any given situation you must look at the bigger picture to make a change for the better.

A lot of the reason they don't put more embezzlers in jail is because you can't pay off the debt when you are in jail. I agree it's weird.

Wonderful idea and if they don't pay send them to gaol. If they do pay perhaps with the proceeds of another crime. So how do you force an unemployed drug addict with no prospect of work to pay. OK stop his benefits so how does he live? More crime
