If a batted ball hits the foul pole in the air, it's a home run. If a batted ball hits the foul line in the air, it's a fair ball. The semantics can be confusing. It's similar to a "near miss" in the airline industry, which means that two airplanes almost hit each other in flight. The language suggests that they nearly missed each other, which means they actually hit. Likewise, in baseball, the "foul pole" really represents "fair" territory.

It's a home run when it hits the foul pole. When it lands on the foul line, it's a fair ball but only if it stays on the foul line past 1st or 3rd base.

The foul poles and foul lines are, yes, fair territory. Any ball hit off a pole on the fly is supposed to be a home run, but I did watch a Red Sox game once where Rich Gedman clanged one off the outside edge of the pole -- it clearly hit it, the trajectory changed notably -- and it was called foul. I couldn't believe it.
Ah, good ol' Retrosheet: 01-July-1988: Rich Gedman on the Red Sox homered off Gene Garber in Kansas City in the eighth inning with 1 man on base. And Boston behind 8-7. First base umpire Dale Scott (part of a three man crew) ruled the fly foul although it hit off the right field pole. Gedman then hit into a double play and the score remained 8-7.

It's a Home Run. Any ball that hits the fall pole, on the foul side or fair side, its still a Home Run.
If it lands on the foul line, it is a fair ball.

If a ball hits the fould pole or foul line it is fair. If it hits the pole above the fence it's a home run.
Like the line in, I think Bull Durham, it should be called the fair line.

the word "Foul" is a misnomer. If the ball hits the pole, it's fair. If the ball hits the pole above the fence line, it's a homerun.

The foul pole is fair, so touch 'em all....and even if the baseball bounces off a fan's dome, no matter, once it hits that pole it's a fair ball. A better question is why the fair pole is called foul!

If it hits the foul pole in the air, without having bounced first, its a homerun.
