I have a Mac OSX and it comes with a microphone built-in. I know the computer can understand me because you can give commands to open applications. Do i have to buy an application for my speech to become text???

the built in speech recognition is mediocre!

system preferences -> speech

You can teach it to do some things, and even get it to insert text for you speech... but it sucks and few people (except the blind) use it.

I use Dragon Naturally Speaking. It is voice recognition software. You will have to train the software to recognize your voice and vocal characteristics. Of course, the more you use it, the better it works.
