I was given a fishtank with this particular filter. When I start it up in water and the container full of water also, it seems like the water level in the filter starts to drop and you can hear the moter start to strain. Am I doing something wrong or can someone help me trouble shoot this it did not come with a manual. HELP

Here's the manual online: http://www.marineland.com/products/manuals/emperor_manual.pdf

There's also a customer service number (toll free, but it's M-F).

If you do need a new impeller or motor, you can check your local stores, but there's also a way to order directly from the manufacturer: http://www.marineland.com/products/consumer/con_emperor.asp

First make sure to clean it thoroughly. The Emporer has a 2 impeller assembly. One is use for driving water through the biowheels and one is used pushing water through the filter pads.

Once it is through cleaned, including the intake screeen place it on the back of the tank with the intake tube as low in the tank as you can get it.

Now take a cup and fill the filter box with water from the tank until it starts to overflow back into the tank.

Now plug in the filter. You should see the water levels inside the filter box drop as the impellers kick on and start pushing water out of the filter. However this should also start the siphon action and start drawing water up from the tank and into the filter box. Typically this can take 5-10 seconds before they equalize and the filter starts running properly.

I had one of those once. I believe they advertise that they are self priming, but mine never was. Have you tried to pour water into the filter after you started it? Try that and it should start up in a few seconds. You need to keep pouring water in until it runs on its own. If it doesn't, you could have a problem with the impeller. Sometimes the magnet wears out and and it's unable to suck water into the main chamber properly. You can get a new one for cheap though.

The Emperor 280 features a revolutionary two pump design. They send water in two different directions through the filter to provide balanced filtration. The Flow Pump routes water through the filter cartridge which provides mechanical and chemical filtration. The BIO-Pump pressurizes and send a stream of prefiltered water through the spray bar to power-drive the BIO-Wheel. The filter also features an adjustable Spray Bar Knob that can be turned up or down to change angle or water flow when feeding.

As the spray-bar driven BIO-Wheel turns, it contacts water and air, providing the bacteria with oxygen they need to grow. Because it is a wet/dry biological filter the BIO-Wheel provides bacteria with as much as 30,000 time more oxygen that any underwater biological filtration. More oxygen means more bacteria working working hard to keep your tank ammonia-free and sparkling clean.

The filter has a flow rate of 280 gph and is recommended for aquariums up to 50 gallons. It includes a BIO-wheel, a refillable media container, and cartridge.

check to make sure the impeller is on correctly, and that its not dirty. if it is dirty, rinse it off with tap water and replace it back in your filter. also, make sure the intake tube is not clogged.
