For some reason while trying to access my e-mail earlier today my computer seized up then crashed. I tried to reboot but I was asked to reboot in "safe Mode" which I tried to do. The following message appeared: "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT-VOLUME" and now I can't boot up the computer at all. I haven't added any hardware or programs recently so i can't see that being the problem. Any advice for this computer neophyte???

It sounds like there might be a problem with the master boot record.

It is for this exact reason - a similar experience on one of my computers - that I got interested in Linux. Specifically, the Linux distributions that allow you to run completely from the CD without installing anything to the hard drive.

That way, you can get your computer up and running and have a look at the hard drive and try to fix what's wrong.

Thus far, the most COMPLETE Linux designed SPECIFICALLY to run off the CD is Knoppix.

Others that will run from CD, but with an option to install the the hard drive, are Mandriva One and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu goes one step further... they'll even send you the CD for free, saving you the downloading and burning, which may not be possible if you're in a kiosk or at a buddy's PC.

Yeah. Sounds like it doesn't recognize your hard drive, boot sector, or volume. YOur data is probably still safe but maybe the disk is no longer bootable without intervention.

Would be nice if you had a bootable cd. To save your data, put the hard drive into another computer and copy or burn the files to cd/dvd.

OR, what I would do is buy a new hard drive and reinstall everything.

Good Luck
