= 11/2 - 27/10
= 55/10 - 27/10
= 28/10
= 14/5
= 2 4/5
OR
= 5 5/10 - 2 7/10
= 4 15/10 - 2 7/10
= 2 8/10
= 2 4/5
OR
= 3 (1/2 - 7/10)
= 3(5/10 - 7/10)
= 2 (15/10 - 7/10)
= 2 8/10
= 2 4/5

5 1/2-2 7/10= (5*2+1)/2 - (2*10 + 7)/10

It might be easier if you don't look at it as fractions-

5 1/2 = 5.5

2 7/10 = 2.7

Those are fraction/decimal conversions that you ought to know if they let you out of the third grade, so from there you just subtract like you were taught way back when-

5.5-2.7 = 2.8
