It was not invented, it was define by Geometers.
A prism has two congruent and parallel bases made up of figures enclosed by straight lines. If the center of the top base is directly over the bottom base, the prism is said to be a right prism.

Lines are drawn from the vertices of the bottom base to the corresponding vertices of the upper base, thus forming the solid

If the bases are triangles, then it is a triangular prism. If the lines connecting corresponding vertices of the two bases are perpendicular to both bases, then the triangular prism.

So there can be many types of prisms depending on the shape of the base and depending on whether or not the prism is right.

The triangular prism made up of plastic or glass or any material transparent to light is called an optical prism and refracts light in all the colors of the visible light spectrum forming a rainbow similar to the way raindrops reflect light forming a rainbow.

geometrical prism are not an invention. Therefore, they were NOT invented

a prism is a kind of 3d object.

It's as if you were asking how a part of our language was invented.

Now that you understand your own question, I can start on answering it. the term "prism" comes from the latin "prisma" and before that, from the greek word "prisma" (had a lot of imagination, those greeks ... ;) ) which meant "something sawed off" Which is perfectly logical since a geometrical prism is a "sawed off" part of a n-faced rod.
