Natalie, I chose to have my Q&A left as private because my account was attacked. I was targeted for deletion. Others are doing it as well to protect their accounts.
Some people like to go into the Q&A just out of spite. Sad, but true.
It's a new feature since the last upgrade. I didn't want to do that, but I had no choice.
I don't think you were blocked, although it is a possibility.

It happened to me, too! I got blocked by a newbie with about 3 points and didn't even have an avatar yet!

If you can't answer someone's questions, then you have been officially blocked. If you just can't see them on their profile page, then it's on privacy setting. Don't let it bother you, it's happened to me too. lol
