Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair. (From Wikipedia.)

I'm curious because I am afflicted with it have heard that it is more common that most think.

No BUT I saw it on the show Intervention. She would pull the hair on her head out, count it, save it in a bag and write on the bag how many hairs are inside. She had a pretty good bald spot going on. She also would go and sit in the bathroom for hours and pull out her pubs. She pulled hair from other places also. But the way that she stopped was she went to a therapist that specializes in that, and what the therapist had her do was to go to a mirror with a chair and sit and look at the hair on her head, and she wasn't allowed to touch it for at least a minute. Then the next day it was 2 mins. then so on and so on until she could sit there for an hour and not pull any hairs out. She had her take a mirror in the bathroom and do her vagina the same way. The whole premise was to look at it "head" on (no pun intended) and see that you could get through time without having to do that. And once you can get to the place where you can spend alot of time with out doing it, you have to find something else to do with your time. Like a hobby, painting, reading, whatever. And it worked for her and she had been doing it for YEARS! So good luck. I hope this helps!

Hi. I have had trich for 14 years now. Been wearing wigs for about 10 years. It's very shameful, but it's a habit hard to break. Been thru psychiatrists, physchologist, tons of meds with no relief at all.
It is more common than you think.

I have heard of it; I have two friends who scratch themselves, but none that pull hair. I think it might be very uncomfortable for the victim...doesn't that hurt? btw, Linda Barnes writes books about a detective who does that...Cold Case is the best one of them I've read, but there are many.

If you lived in this F-uped town, it's enough to make anyone want to pull their hair out. I wish I could bulldoze it.

I know someone intimately with this disorder. It is also classified as a symptom of OCD. There are meds available that help. Don't be shy about seeing a doctor.
