Here are some places you can play chess online:
1. yahoo chess- easy to use interface, java, no download required. intermediate level competition.
2. instantchess.com- great place to play if you just want to play chess with anyone, anytime. Automatically takes you to a game.
If you are serious about playing chess, I would recommend these programs which you have to download.
3. chessclub.com- probably contains the biggest collections of professional chess players in the world. players of all different levels here. offers chess lessons, lectures, and tournaments.
4. playchess.com-europe's biggest chess server although you don't have to be european. Some top players in the world have been seen on here. also offers tournaments.
5. uschesslive.org- official program of the united states chess federation. easy to use interface, different level competition, lectures, tournaments etc...

If you mean against a human, Yahoo chess is buggy. Go there and you'll be one of the perplexed asking us why your opponent doesn't lose on time. I use http://www.freechess.org
