Even if the basic fare is cheaper, check what is included. Even when food is paid for, you will spend money of drinks and entertainment.
So far all people I heard of who traveled by ship paid more in the long run because of the hidden costs, if they not started out by paying more because there are a lot of cheap flights and not many cheap cruises and ocean crossing ferries.
And on top of that, it will cost you the time, in which you can not earn money, and do not have the holiday you had planned. (Unless a cross ocean cruise is your kind of holiday.)

could be cheap - but will take you at least a month - well if you travel from Australia .... and it's totally boring.
