Is it just me, or was George Lazenby's portrayal of James Bond in "On her Majesty's Secret Service" a disappointment.

I think he was the worst bond ever. Even Daniel Craig is a better Bond than Lazenby.

I agree, Sean Connery was definitely the best Bond, and in my opinion From Russia With Love was his best movie.
Never Say Never Again was a huge letdown though, I think he should have quit while he was ahead.

Timothy Dalton wasn't bad, he wasn't Connery but then again no one is.

And The Living Daylights is a great movie.

I have to disagree, the worst is Timothy Dalton, Daniel Craig is better than George but I compared his performance to Dalton and he is better.
To me the best is Sean Connery, followed closely by Daniel Craig because he really portrayed Bond as he is reflected in the novels, followed by Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.
I am more critical of Dalton vs. Lazenby because George's potrayal was the closest to the novels description of Bond prior to Daniel Craigs' entry into Bond. .

To Jon, George's performance was not why he only did one. He was a last minute replacement for Sean and he had only agreed to do the one movie. They had offered him a 7 movie contract but his manager talked him into only doing the one. Also part of the problem with the movie was that parts of it appeared stilted but that was on the part of the director. They dubbed over his voice in many parts of the movie with someone elses.
Then they used it as a ploy to lure Connery back, which worked.
Edited to add:
The Living Daylights - gadgetry great- acting not quite there. He tried to be more serious and come close to the books but did not quite pull it off.

You are forgetting one of the best Bonds ever,

Roger Moore, He was the best, Spy who loved me, For your eyes only, Man With The Golden Gun, Live And Let Die, Moonraker and A View To A Kill. He did the best ones with Sean Connery coming in 2nd the Peirce then Timmy then Lazenby and last but definitely not least comes Daniel.

But yes i actually thought that George was a huge let down and that the beginning of the movie was really boring but once you got farther in he actually got a bit better.

I read some 007 novels before I saw any of the movies, so I pictured 007 as most like Timothy Dalton. Sean Connery was good, but he doesn't look as much like Ian Fleming's Bond as some others did. I say Roger Moore was worst. Bond was dark, so Moore and Craig are too light. I cannot find the Lazenby fim, except in boxed sets now, and I have most of the movies in that set, so I won't buy it.

Funny thought i have. Sure, James Bond maybe the famous dashing spy..... but being so, he should cease to become one. Spies are those who are in deep, unnoticed, unknown. Truly, this glamorous James Bond is the anti-thesis of the real spy. But I do enjoy watching 007 James Bond films. And I do hope that the future James Bond would evolved into a somewhat similar to those working in the real espionage world (though I doubt if such movie would sell).

There are numerous problems with that.

Coming on the heels of Sean, it was a tough role to fill. The script was incredibly weak and went on for far too long and the attempt to make a "new Bond" just wasn't there and george lacked the chops to pull it off

I think that's the consensus. That's why he only did one. The movie itself tho, is not bad. Better than some of the Roger Moore ones. I'm sorry, but I just didn't like Moore as Bond.
