We, of the LGBT community are continually being asked if we would accept a "cure" for homosexuality. Most of those asking tell us their question is out of curiosity, compassion or out of downright hatred. They most of the time start their questions with "I'm not gay.....". Do you think those people have insecurities regarding their own sexual preference and use this LGBT board for our opinions or are they just trying to raise hell and infuriate us?

I think they're insecure, and that's why they come over here to get people worked up, so they can reaffirm their straightness. I think there's a question up that asks about being called a homophobe when one's just expressing his straightness, so the answer's right there. Since when does someone need to come to the LGBT boards to start trouble to express being straight unless he's scared?

Qualifier: I'm straight.

Some of these same people also say that the Earth is only 6,000 years old, that man walked alongside dinosaurs, that evolution never happened (and is an evil concept to boot). Your answer is "some people are ignorant". They really don't know any better. I always laugh when I hear somebody trying to offer a "cure" for homosexuality. Its a joke, but unfortunately its a sad joke because it exposes the ignorance of the people that believe this nonsense actually works. Have a good day.

Wow. You read a lot into a simple question.

Those Of Us Who Are Straight don't understand you who are not. It's completely foreign to us. We can't comprehend why you would do what you do. It sounds to me like the question is an effort to understand someone who is incomprehensible.

It's actually quite an innocent question: "Would you seek to be different -- more like the majority of the people around you -- if you could?" Your answer to that question tells me a lot about why you behave like you do. You may consider it insensitive, but consider the fact that the person asking has absolutely no common ground with you and is simply trying to establish raport. I think the problem in this case is that you are too sensitive.

Consider an example from my life: I'm a Christian and I believe the Bible. Over in the Religion & Spirituality section my beliefs are constantly belittled. People ask how I can believe the stupid things I believe. I can either get angry about that and accuse them of all manner of evil, or I can realize that they just have a different perspective than I do and they really don't understand who I am. They may not really be TRYING to understand, but they're acting on their own belief system to try to see if it's possible to "convert" me to being "normal".

So don't worry about it. Answer the question. If the answer is "no", explain why. Maybe you'll make a friend instead of enflaming an enemy.

I think they have been told that homosexuality is wrong, and they just want to know more about it.

It's like if someone has a missing limb they'll have to field a lot of questions about that from strangers, it's the same on here.

I think most of the time there's no malice, they just want to understand.

i think they just dont know how it feels to be gay, just as we dont know how it feels to be straight. we just know we're the minority and we're treated differently and they wonder what it would be like to be in that minority, and if we would accept normalcy if it was offered to us. i dont think its about insecurities or trying to get us mad - its just curiosity. however, youre right, it is pretty obnoxious.
