Dishwashers don't really drain -- they pump. They sit lower than the plumbing under the sink, so they have to use a pump to remove the water. Start with that.

I had this problem recently. Thought the drain was plugged at first but it wasn't. The pump would pump water but not against any backpressure, such as the head pressure of the drain pipe going up to the air gap.

Long story short...this dishwasher has a self cleaning screen in the back of the dishwasher and the seal on the check valve was rotted. The pump just kept drawing water out and pushing it right back into the dishwasher. We replaced the seal and it worked like a charm. This seal was never even mentioned in the maintenance manual, it took us good old American Ingenuity to figure it out.

In case nothing else works, try this.

A few things to check. The filter in the bottom of the unit (inside) may have food built up in it and is not allowing it to drain. The pump may not be working. The drain hose could be clogged. Check these things out.

Maybe your food trap is clogged? Remove the screen and check it out.
