Hi!

Fish keeping can be pets or hobby, as well as dogs and cats can be pets or hobby. It all depends on you.

If you are keeping a community of fish in an ecosystem, buying more fish, rearranging plants, etc, the fish become "decoration" for your home. Fishkeeping is certainly a great hobby, since it ives pleasure, is relaxing to watch, and FUN! Some people show fish and breed fish, or study fish. For those people, fish is more like their passion than hobby. Let's put it the other way around. Some fish, such as Oscars and bettas, can be pets. Some high-intelligent fish such as those I mentioned, are "pet" fish and people have them as real pets, and sometimes even part of the family. Oscars are probably the most well-known of all pet fish, and it is because of their personality. They have ability to recognize their owners, you can teach them tricks (ex. spinning, swimming as you order, and swimming through a hoop), and they will let you pet them. My friend has an Oscar and she treats him just like a dog. He gets excited whenever she comes by (not when I come by :[), and she pets him, and they truly interact with one another. Whereas, most of the freshwater schooling fish, such as danios an tetras, never have a true interaction with us, and do their "school" thing. They only come up to the front of the tank because they know they might be fed when you come up, and want eat as much as possible, not because they are happy to see you. You will never get the to trust you, either.

Let's talk dogs. Many people keep dogs as their pets, but meny have them for a hobby, or profession. If you are keeping dogs, and do shows once in a while, do some agility, this and that, they are having dogs as hobby. If they are showing exclusively, and going to professional shows, they have their dogs as passion, or same if they are breeding them. So it all depends on the person.

I guess the general impression of dogs and cats is a "pet" and fih is a decoration or a hobby is because how majority of people keep them. If you see people walking their dogs in the street, or a dog park, they usually have their dogs as pets. But the fish is different. Suppose you go to th hospital or something and see fish. those fish are used for relaxation as well as decoration. And most of the aqurists have fish because they find it very interesting to decorate the tank like the ecosystem, and they are into them. They are hobby. And even if they are not very into fish, and just have an aquarium, they are, once again, hobby. The majority of aqarists don't have one Oscar for their pets. Or if a little kid buys a cute betta and name it and keep it in their room, and spend time with it, it can be a pet, I guess.

I hope this gave you a better idea why :]

Fishkeepiing is a hobby, fish are pets. Fishkeeping is a hobby because you are balancing the water quality with the number and types of fish. Also, you are making something beautiful with the aquascaping. You aren't so much creating when you have a dog or cat as a pet, it is more of a relationship (though some fish enjoy being petted, and recognize their owners). In many ways, making a beautiful tank is more time consuming than caring for a dog (much more time consuming than a cat!).

Fishkeeping is a hobby because all aspects of it are 'meant' to be enjoyed.

Cleaning out the tank, feeding the fish and breeding the fish all require a level of skill.

People also build fishtanks, and aquascape (landscaping the plants, gravel ornaments etc.)

I would say that keeping a cat or a dog can be a hobby if you do more than just feed them and talk them for a walk. The people who groom and train there pets and enter them in competitions definately see it as a hobby(or even a job!)

Certainly fish can be pets. Generally it's called a hobby because you are actually keeping an entire ecosystem, not just a single animal. Yes, some people keep many cats or many dogs, but that's not the same thing because each animal could live independent of each other while in a tank the ecosystem depends on different animals to keep it healthy.

It can be considered both I think. Taking care of them can be considered a hobby but alot of people love their fish as pets. I guess it is just a matter of a persons interest level... some consider them pretty household items and then there are those of us that worship our fish lol. This is actually a good question that I have never given any thought to. Thanks for the insight!

It is considered a hobby because of the variety and all the learning and reading up you do on them. They are your pets but it is not like you can play with them. As a hobby you redecorate your aquarium and are always looking for something new to put in it. Do you get the hobby idea now? I guess it depends how involved you get.

I have no real answer to your question, but I do consider my fish as pets rather than as a hobby.

of course fish is pet. they are part of my life and i enjoy doing the cleaning for them and feeding them. it breaks my heart when i see them sick or dying. it's just the same way when you have dogs and cats. so fish is definitely pet.

My fish are pets! They have personalities.
One of them retrieves the newspaper from the front porch in the morning.
Two are specially trained attack fish for home protection.
One fish just had a litter of kittens!
