I have a 3 ft tank and i have had gravel in but i find it really hard to keep clear of fish poop and junk, So i now keep it bare bottom with some big rocks and plants, So i was thinking would sand be ok to put in with feshwater fish? And what kind/type should i get, And is it easy to keep clean,
And the most important question:::

When i syphon it to take all the poop/junk out will the sand not get sucked up? And if it does then how do you clean it?

And it needs to be sand that is available in the UK as that is where i stay.

Sand can be used very effectively in fish tanks. You need to make sure the sand has no chemicals/dyes in it.

Sand is a particularly good substrate if you keep fish with long barbels.

Sand isn't as easy to keep clean, when using a vacumn/syphon you will need to hover it just above the sand to pick up the detritus but not suck up the sand.

Yes, sand is great for freshwater tanks and it makes it easier to clean. Since the sand is denser than poop, the poop sits on top, and when you vacuum, the sand stays with the sand, and the poop goes through the hose. Any sand is okay really, but don't get crushed coral, it will affect the pH too much. Any kind of play sand that would go in a sand box would be good, and the sand that they use to sandblast (you can find it at hardware stores). Make sure you sit any decorations on the bottom glass, not the sand(any fish that dig will dig under decorations if they sit on the sand. When they dig under the decorations, they lose balance and can fall on fish and injure or kill them!)! Good luck!

I have two freshwater tanks (one is three ft long the other is 6 ft long) with sand bottoms and I love it. I do not have any problems keeping it clean, it is actually easier than the three aquariums I have with rock bottoms. I do not have any problems syphoning the junk off of it. The only problem I have ever had is I have one fish who loves to dig and rearranges the decorations.

You have already answered your own question in a way. It's very difficult to keep sand clean in a tank. If you thought clean gravel was a pain, you would really, really HATE sand.

Sand is a bad idea unless you have a reef tank.

And if you have problems keeping gravel clean then maybe this isn't the hobby for you. Fishkeeping requires regular maintenance.
