Yea I think you can but there will probobly be little parts in the seventh book that you dont get because they left them out in the movies but that doesnt really matter you should be able to read it without any major misunderstandings.

I would say you've read/will have read the most important ones. Six definitely has more information than 1-4 combined that you will need to know for 7, and 5 is packed too. I would say you need to read at least the climax of 2 to review the diary scene (specifically its destruction). Don't want to give away too much here, since you haven't read 6 yet. Prisoner of Azkaban movie is completely botched and wrong, so if you want that info (which is fairly important, especially the dementors, according to my book 7 theory) you should read the book. Goblet movie has pretty much all the major points, but you should know this line of Voldemort's before you read 6. "I was less than the meanest ghost, but I was still alive. Even I did not know what I was, I who have gone farther along the path to immortality than anyone..." It's not exactly like this, but I didn't want to go get my copy and type it verbatim, but you get the idea of the line. Have fun and I can't wait for Deathly Hallows!

I think you would enjoy the story more if you have read them all.
You may be able to get the books on tape or cd, at the library, so if you're worried you can't read fast enough to be at book seven when it comes out that may be an option.
My favorite book is 6 so far, but if I hadn't read the others. it would have been difficult to follow.
Also as much as I enjoy the movies and the great job Daniel and gang do, the books have all kinds of inside jokes and moments the movies just didn't have time to show ..well I hope that helps.

It's really hard to say because we don't know what will be left out of the movies that will turn out to be important.
The writers are free to change the story to fit their needs. For example, they left out dobby from movie 4 when he played a very important part. They also left him out of movie 5 (i think)... also playing a part.
I'd say, see movie 5 and read book 6 before reading book 7. That should give you a background. You'll need book 6 for sure because it introduces whole concepts that have not yet been touched on in the series but that hold the key to the series.

You can get by doing as you suggest, but the books are really worth reading regardless. Time constraints prevent the movies from going into as much detail as the books, and some really worthwhile scenes are also left out because ya just can't put the whole book into a movie and keep it at a length audiences will sit through.
If you can, read all the books to get the most out of the entire story...if you can't or don't really want to, you shouldn't find yourself lost if you do as you suggest and read some of the books, and watch some of the movies.

Why would you just read 1 and 5? The other books are just as good and not to mention that the movies are always worse than the books because they leave out so much detail! I suggest that you read the other books..they are really enjoyable and you will understand the plot a whole lot better!

If you can answer these questions just from the movies, then you don't need to read the books. But I did try to pick items either not in the movies or changed in the movies.

you need to read the books expectualy 6 before you read 7. the books build on each other and there are important parts in each. so i say read book 6. there are things in the books that aren't in the movie and the movies change things and have to cut things out. so read the books or you will miss something

You may be able to get most of the plot, but there is so much that is left out from the movies as far as little things go that you really should read the books.

The book are so self-referential that it would really help you if you read the books.
Or, at the very least, read the summaries on wikipedia.
You should read them, though... the movies leave stuff out, and since the directors have no clue what will happen in the books they might leave out something that will be of importance later.
