you have a hard time hearing? It seems today when you just want to have lunch, there is always so much background noise in the restaurants. I tried eating outdoors, but a speaker is placed out there as well. If we are in a group, I can only hear those to the right of me (hearing in left not so good). This is with the use of a hearing aid which picks up every sound but what you want to hear. How do you cope?

My husband had that problem. He also suffers from tinnitus. He always has the latest technology in hearing aids, but finds that background noises still cause problems. So he took a course in lip-reading at the Deafness Association to help him along. He finds it gives him more confidence. Between the hearing aid and lip-reading, he does very well.

What? (joking) Supposedly hearing aid technology has advanced quite considerably in the last few years. How old is your aid? Try looking into a digital hearing aid, though not brand new they have perfected them so that unwanted background noise can be totally eliminated.

What are digital hearing aids?

The term DIGITAL is used so often today, it can be confusing. When the term "digital" is used when referring to hearing aids, it generally means the hearing aid is 100% digital. In other words, the hearing aid is indeed a "complete computer". 100% digital hearing aids have been commercially available since the mid-1990s and they are wonders of modern technology. 100% digital hearing aids can process sound using incredibly fast speeds. Interestingly, most 100% digital hearing aids have some analog components, such as the microphone and the receiver. 100% digital hearing aids transform analog information into a digital signal and process the sound to maximize the speech information you want to hear, while minimizing the amplification of sounds you do not want to hear.

Digital technology is tremendous and it allows the audiologist maximal control over the sound quality and loudness of the hearing aid. Importantly, digital technology allows the audiologist to tailor or customize the sound of your hearing aids to what you need and want to hear. In summary, if you want the best technology -- get 100% digital hearing aids.

I have a special hearing aid that cuts out the back ground noise. Yes, being hard of hearing is difficult at times, but most of my problems went away when I got hearing aids.
