If you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be messing with wiring. This is a job that if not done correctly can kill you or burn your house down.

15 amp circuits should use 14 guage or heavier. 20 amp circuits should use 12 guage or heavier.

Use 12 gauge wire on 20 amp breakers. Do not use 14 gauge wire on 20 amp breakers. 20 amp circuts in normal, while there is a national code it can be modified depending on the city or county where you live.

in bedrooms you could use 14 gauge in kitchens you could use 12 gauge for general purpose outlets.

I've a;ways used Romax 14 gauge. Normally this is what's in a home.
If your home is very old and wired with 12 gauge, you should use that.
